A note on the building…

Our building was built in 1874 for Dr. Henry Martin and his family. A Civil War surgeon from Louisiana, Dr. Martin decided to put roots down in Fredericksburg and open a practice. The small building in our garden that is now home to artist Brandon Newton, was his office and used to sit on the street corner of Princess Anne Street and Amelia Street. When his family sold the building in the early 20th century, the building had several lives including being Hughes Travelers Home, and then the law offices of William Scaife from the 1950s until 2007. The law offices of Jeannie P. Dahnk, Esq. (formally Glover & Dahnk) purchased the building in 2007 and has since restored the building to its victorian splendor. In 2012, after an extensive garden renovation, the property was awarded the prestigious HFFI Garden Award. The building has also been a feature on the Historic Fredericksburg Candlelight Tour.
